How the journey began
Christopher Tikhala Eddy Taulo well known as Cris Taulo is a Portrait Artist and Art Educator currently residing in Blantyre, Malawi, celebrated for his poetic portraiture drawings and collaborated projects. His artistic journey is deeply intertwined with personal loss, and emotional resilience, a testament to the healing power of creativity.
Cris discovered his artistic talent in 2012, a year marked by the profound grief of losing his mother. This sorrow was compounded three years later by the passing of his sister. Amidst this grief, Cris turned to portrait drawing as a sanctuary to capture the memories of the lost souls and a way to process his emotions and find solace. "I think I wouldn't have become the artist you know today nor would I have ever pursued art as a career if my mom was stall alive today, I never knew how it feels to loss someone you love and death kind of showed me the other side of the coin, coz suddenly I started to experiencing new emotions and for the first time ever I was in a dark cloud. I think it's the same thing among different people because you don’t understand death until it lands in your family, Just like a person growing up in riches doesn't understand the nature of poverty, I don't know if its human nature or something but I believe that inorder to understand someones pain you must have also experienced it, coz as humans we understand something we can relate to" he Quoted
In 2018, inspired by the artworks he admired in galleries such as La Carvenna, Jacaranda Cultural Center, Chichiri Museum and looking artworks of the old master Leonard Da Vinci and reading about him and his career on the internet, he made the bold decision to pursue art as a career. His dedication was recognized by the artist Peter Masina, who provided him with invaluable training and mentorship. This marked the true beginning of Cris's professional journey.
Cris's work is characterized by a spirit of exploration and a profound curiosity about the world. He infuses his pieces with elements from his favorite subjects, including astronomy, musicology, geology, psychology and biology. These influences are subtly woven into his art through symbolic representations, gestural strokes and color schemes, adding layers of meaning and depth.
Drawing inspiration from the creative careers of Walt Disney, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Steve Jobs, and Michael Jackson, Cris aspires to make a significant impact on the world. He hopes that, like his idols, his work will inspire, show love and bring joy to people, leaving a lasting legacy of creativity, wonder and imagination.
